                                         THINKING ABOUT OBSERVATION

We tell our students to be smart scientists, to carefully observe the world around them. But what does that really mean? What does it mean to observe?

I find that observation is an important tool both as a writer and as a nature photographer. Let me start with photography. Unless you're taking pictures of tame ducks, swans, or household pets, wildlife can be extremely difficult to photograph. Wild creatures have ore important things to do than sit around so you can photograph them. Also, the movements of birds and other animals are erratic and unpredictable, so photographing them can be frustrating. How can I photograph that bird if I have no idea what it will do or where it will go next?

In order to photograph wildlife I start by watching. And this requires patience. Careful observation helps me to learn the animal's habits and behavior. That way I can start to anticipate what they might do next. I'll explain how that played how while photographing this Belted Kingfisher.

Some wildlife is okay if humans are nearby, but not the kingfisher. At the first sign that a person is close, the kingfisher will fly off. I love kingfishers, so I'm eager to get a sharp image. I would love to get a shot of the kingfisher with a fish in its mouth--but how?

Recently I was taking pictures at a pond not too far from my house. For a while nothing happened. Suddenly I heard a loud rattling--the call of the kingfisher! For the next fifteen minutes I watched it fly around. First it landed on a tree to the far left. Then the kingfisher was on a tree to the far right. I watchd it over over the water, looking for a fish. Suddenly it plummeted, grab something out of the water, and flew off.

I continued watching. There was a vertical pice of wood, about six feet high, sticking up at the back of the pond. The kingfisher landed on it. I wasn't very close, but I could watch it through a pair of binoculars. For four or five minutes it stared intently at the surface of the water. Suddenly it dropped down, plunged underwater, and returned to the same perch with a fish in its mouth! Birds will often do this...returning to the same perch. As I watched I saw the same sequence happen again and again.

Now I could see the pattern. The kingfisher would leave its perch, swoop down, go underwater, grab a fish, and fly back to the same perch to enjoy breakfast. I prefocused my camera on the top of that stick, exactly where I knew the kingfisher would land. I set my shutter spped to 1/2000th of a second because a fast shutter speed is necessary to freeze a fast-flying bird.

Next time the kingfisher left to get a fish I began pressing the shutter as fast as I could. Sure enough, the bird returned to the perch and I was able to get several sharp images. See below.

When we talk to students about observation we often tell them to study small details. That's important, but it's more than that. Skillful observation requires us to stand back, watch over a period of time, and learn the patters of behavior that are distinctive to that creature.

    “The Duchess of Ireland”

The ten doves waved charmingly as an English galley and perched on the moors of linen of strong hemp cascading their day as the sun was now in full glory. The night was next after 10 more days of struggle for the mooring was old and landing to northern India we headed as the moon pitched more information under the guidance of our tablet of seamanship and here the compass spun wild for the magnet was early and of strong Irish knowledge and the northern peninsula was angry with spray that August early morning in 1703 annum domino. The early moonlight was drifting wild as the sun was orange red and here two armadas one of the King of Naples sounded a gun blast with the same old wood and stock and near killed me as I read the Ship's Manual and upon the soaring bullet of iron from a decking vessel meant for pirates from 6, 3851 -meters I summoned a steer-to-port with cannons ready for a overboard to kill the pirates aboard and my name is Captain Donald Michael Stevens of Ireland. With steady hands and witch-and-pull we raced fast with wind current at tremendous speed arching the waves that pounded and while my men were ready for war I noticed that the speed of the wavering vessel had Bones of old the Cross and England in black-and-red and speeding a port in a clipping manor and with grace and true Irish style I raised the two open cannons for fire! The first ball hit the boarding vessel with blasting of iron heat killing the captain dead. The ladies on board were screaming and nine of our men were dallying with schooner life crafts to assemble their rescue as the wind was blowing hard that morning and sharks ambled near two were hammerhead and the other a great white swarming near the port and I gunned the last ball to warn the hungry monsters to fend elsewhere as the Irish seamen rescued ever lady except one who drowned dead.

The next day provisions were made for rape victims all British and wounds were taken care of for the volley was complete and the moors needed more tending too and here a sea horse in green was tattooed on women living as we birthed their revival. I guess the sea was angrier than an Irishman set to sail that day yet with composure I revealed as the tally of the dead were drifting nearby all pirates and dirty! One boarded on and was the Captain. He had two tattoos; one was war of irons firing and objected via schooner on my paperwork. His skin was black tanned and bore the resemblance of a King of old lore and had a smell of gunpowder. While I trusted the old cabby I found his movement old and dangerous, and held his hand to board on for a meeting. My meeting was early in the day as a dangerous monster arrived on board with a dark dirty beard and handed me a glacis from England. He demanded the resignation of all Ireland as I looked puzzled. I questioned now as the gloves of birds all dove flew by as the summer moon was burning red hot, "tell me old boy; is that your face not shaved?" He nearly hit me. Yet through the spray eating at my left ear I crossed his mighty big fist for England. He was big and really big like a mighty sword of Ireland and when he fell down I smiled and said, "okay, old brig, come aboard, for now." I fell down as a mighty fist hammered me aboard and I removed his eye with a swift kick. He limbered near dead and a kind nurse attended to his needs while his patch was addressed. Eye as pirates removed cannons for their dirty leader of the ocean blue fired a 16 pound steel bomb as we changed the compass to avoid the burst that August 12. Beating nine dead the moon was dark orange as a Vessel the Pirate of Cross nine miles fought with lead balls bursting near and caught her hand cooling as Company nurse blue bug eyed smiling removing leather hot gloves viewing our cannons iron ready.
